SENEGAL
Senegal is a vibrant West African country known for its rich culture, music, and hospitality. Its capital, Dakar, sits along the Atlantic coast and serves as a major cultural and economic hub. The nation is famous for its tradition of teranga, a Wolof word that expresses warmth, generosity, and community spirit. Senegal has a deep artistic heritage, from traditional drumming to modern influences shaped by artists like Youssou N’Dour. French is the official language, but many local languages such as Wolof are widely spoken. The country is also known for its historic landmarks, including Gorée Island, which reflects its role in the transatlantic slave trade. With diverse landscapes ranging from beaches to savannas,
Senegal offers both natural beauty and cultural depth.
Lat Jor Ngoné Latir Jop was a prominent 19th-century leader of the Wolof kingdom of Cayor in present-day Senegal. He is remembered for his strong resistance against French colonial expansion during a time of growing European influence in West Africa. Lat Jor fiercely opposed the construction of the Dakar–Saint-Louis railway, seeing it as a threat to his kingdom’s sovereignty. His leadership symbolized courage, independence, and dedication to protecting his people and traditions. He died in battle in 1886, becoming a lasting national hero in Senegalese history.
